During the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, Red Bull Racing caused a stir in the Formula 1 world. The Milton Keynes-based team officially unveiled four special upgrades for the RB21, something no one expected at this point in the season. The updates came as a complete surprise to both fans and rival teams, and immediately caused a stir in the paddock.

According to documents submitted to the FIA, the improvements consist of modifications to the car’s floor, winglets, brake cooling system, and engine cover. These four components should collectively improve aerodynamic efficiency and minimize performance losses due to the thin air in Mexico City. Because the circuit is located over 2,000 meters above sea level, aerodynamic drag and cooling are always a challenge for the teams.
The RB21’s new floor is designed to generate more downforce without creating additional drag, while redesigned side winglets improve airflow around the tires. Red Bull has also introduced larger brake air intakes to prevent overheating, and the engine cover has been redesigned with a new cooling duct that more efficiently dissipates heat from the engine bay.
A Red Bull engineer explained that the adjustments are the result of months of work in the wind tunnel. He said the Mexican GP is the ideal place to test this new configuration due to its unique combination of altitude, temperature, and humidity.
Not everyone was happy with the timing of these innovations. McLaren, Red Bull’s biggest rival this season, reacted furiously when the news broke. Shortly after the first free practice session, the Woking-based team filed an official complaint with the FIA, requesting an investigation into the legality of the upgrades. A McLaren spokesperson stated that the changes were “unusually extensive” for the final phase of the championship and may fall outside the permitted development limits.
The FIA confirmed receipt of the complaint but emphasized that, as of yet, no rule appears to have been broken. Nevertheless, the atmosphere in the paddock immediately became tense. Other teams, including Ferrari and Mercedes, are following the situation with great interest.
Max Verstappen remained calm when speaking to the media. He said he has complete confidence in his engineers and that the car feels excellent. The three-time world champion seemed determined to focus on the race instead of the political storm surrounding him.
Meanwhile, several analysts stated that Red Bull is once again demonstrating its technical superiority with this move. However, others emphasized that transparency remains crucial at this crucial stage of the season. If the upgrades are indeed within the regulations, these improvements could give Red Bull a decisive advantage in the fight for the world title.
The Mexican Grand Prix, always known for its unique conditions and passionate fans, promises not only a spectacular duel on the track, but also a political game behind the scenes. One thing is clear: Red Bull’s decision to introduce four major updates simultaneously has turned the 2025 Formula 1 season upside down.
